I am a woman with a bleeding disorder. I was prescribed osteoporosis RX by infusion at the hospital every six months. I have a history of joint pain, bruising, and nosebleeds while on other osteoporosis RXs. Is it safe to take?

Osteoporosis is defined by a severe reduction in bone mineral density (BMD) predisposing to fractures and additional morbidity. In patients with hemophilia, there is certainly data to support the association with osteoporosis, but less is known about rare bleeding disorders and von Willebrand disease. Treatment for osteoporosis is the same as with patients without a bleeding disorder and commonly used, at least in the VWD and hemophilia population. There is no contraindication to use of these bisphosphonates for treatment of osteoporosis in bleeding disorder patients.
