Are progesterone IUDs successful in reducing heavy menstrual bleeding?

There has been success in small studies demonstrating significant reduction in heavy periods with the use of progestin IUDs (Mirena devices) in bleeding disorders such as hemophilia carriers, low VWF and von Willebrand disease. There is definitely a benefit using this in non-bleeding disorder patients. Our personal experience at our center shows the majority of hemophilia carriers (even those with levels in the mild to moderate severity range) and low VWF, or von Willebrand disease respond to hormonal therapy such a combined oral contraceptive, progestin or an IUD.
