Are you aware of the preventive health care services covered by your insurance? A study conducted by KFF in June 2024 found that nearly 30% of women aged 18 to 49 are under the impression that most insurance plans are not required to pay the full cost of contraception for women, and 27% answered that they don’t know. This percentage is significantly lower when asked about coverage of routine mammograms and annual check-ups, as far more people were aware that insurance covers these preventive services. But there are clear misconceptions around coverage of contraceptives, which are also deemed important preventive health services, similar to mammograms and yearly clinic visits.

These stats are concerning because it means many WGPPM may have been paying out-of-pocket for their contraception, when they didn’t need to. Some health insurers have even charged for contraception that they are supposed to cover in full.
Always stay on top of your health coverage and benefits by checking with your insurance provider regarding any potential procedures or services you will be receiving. There is a chance they are viewed as a preventative measure and are therefore covered in full. Don’t overpay for preventative health services that exist to keep you healthy and safe!
